With his goal against Celta Vigo on Saturday, Barça’s Lionel Messi completed one of the most astonishing records in the history of the game.
In scoring for the 19th La Liga game in a row, the Argentine become the only player in La Liga history to score against each opponent in the league – in consecutive games!
It was way back on November 11, 2012 when Leo found the net against Mallorca, that this run began.
His double against the islanders in week 11 was followed by 2 goals in each of the next five games against Zaragoza, Levante, Athletic, Betis and Atletico Madrid.
The following four games against Valladolid, Espanyol, Malaga and Real Sociedad saw Messi register a single goal, and a ‘poker’ (4 goals) against Osasuna in week 21 continued the record.
Valencia and Getafe were his next victims before another double against Granada. Sevilla, Real Madrid, Deportivo and Rayo Vallecano were also unable to contain La Pulga’s mastery which left only Celta Vigo to be vanquished.
Sure enough, a wonderful first time finish from a pinpoint Cristian Tello cross saw Messi claim a record that will surely go down as one of the best ever.
