SV Hamburger captain and Dutch international Rafael Van der Vaart (30) recently told German magazine Sport Bild that Bayern Munich “has no options” against Champions League semi-final rivals FC Barcelona.
“One player separates Bayern from Barcelona: Lionel Messi,” Van der Vaart said. The Dutch striker knows Pep Guardiola’s Barça well thanks to the two seasons he spent at Real Madrid from 2008-2010.
Messi, who recently received the green light from Barcelona’s medical staff to resume training at full capacity, is a sure starter for the first leg at the Allianz Arena in Munich on April 23.
Despite Bayern boasting the second highest possession average behind FC Barcelona, 57% and 68% respectively, Van der Vaart believes Die Roten’s game is still no match for that of the Catalans.
“When Bayern faces up against Barcelona in the semi-finals, they won’t have more than 30% possession. Barcelona has an incredible system.
They always have the ball. Bayern has no options,” the striker said.
The Dutchman reflected on the outcome of an all-German and Spanish semi-final, saying it shows how much quality the Bundesliga has gained in recent years.
“The German league has gone another rung up the ladder and is currently the most interesting league in the world,” Van der Vaart said.
